This prestigious 50km trail run takes place in the Royal Natal Park, part of the Ukhahlamba-Drakensberg World Heritage Site and home to the endangered Bearded Vulture. The Bearded Vulture once roamed freely from the Cape of Good Hope, along the eastern mountain spine of Africa, and into northwest Africa. Now it is thought that the only population left in the Southern Hemisphere resides in our isolated and rugged Maluti-Drakensberg highlands, and that there are less than 100 pairs left.

Make no mistake, the WILDSERIES Mont-Aux-Sources Challenge is a toughie, but it’s definitely worth the blood, sweat and tears, and will certainly be an experience of a lifetime. Expect to run through some of our country’s most rugged and beautiful scenery. Your route will take you through the Mahai Valley and up towards the escarpment where you will have to tackle the chain ladders and then scramble down the Gully. This race is a spectacular adventure, and worth every ache you will suffer afterwards!

Meals are not included in a package unless specifically stated. We encourage the pre-purchase of meals to assist our catering with accurate numbers. However meals will be available to purchase on site from a number of vendors covering a range of dietary requirements.

Gate Entry Fees:

All participants will get free entry to the park –as your name will be on a list at the gate. All family and friends must pay the KZN Wildlife entrance fee on entry into The Royal Natal National Park – unless you are staying at Mahai Campsite or Thendele Camp, where your entry is included in your accommodation fee. Your park entry fee includes an emergency/rescue levy in the event that you sustain an injury during the event that requires you to be airlifted out by helicopter.

NOTE: Family and friends who attend registration on Friday and come to the race on Saturday morning will have to pay entry fees on both days. Family/Friends can pay for Saturday on Friday at registration (you will receive a disc) this will make sure that cars move quicker through the gate on Saturday morning.

Pre-Race Briefing:

A pre-race briefing that MUST be attended by all participants will take place at 6pm during registration inside the marquee on Friday evening. Final instructions regarding route changes (if necessary) and a weather report will be given on Saturday morning, 10 minutes before the start of the race.

Start Time and Seeding

The start of the event is staggered to relieve congestion on the mountain paths, which was a problem during some earlier events. Each runner is seeded into one of 4 start groups (A, B, C and D) based on their most recent marathon time. If no marathon time was given in the entry form, then a 6-hour marathon time is given to the runner. The intention is to start the quicker runners first to reduce overtaking. In order to accommodate runners of different speeds starting together, we allow voluntary reseeding, but emphasise that it is imperative to advise the officials at the start of whether you are starting in a group for which you were not seeded. Otherwise, you are assumed to have started where originally seeded.

The KidZone is a secure and managed area where caretakers will look after your kids while you are out there having fun – keeping them entertained with face painters, balloonists, jumping castles and fun workshops on how to plant their own trees or create their own worm farm! Why not sign your kids in, brave the race, and then sign them out once you are done? It is FREE for all athletes!

Please note that our ‘no refunds’ policy applies to all entries – unless a substitution can be found at least two weeks before the event. It is the participant’s responsibility to find a substitution, not the organisers’. If a participant intends to withdraw, he/she must inform the organisers immediately and check if there is a waiting list in place – if there is, their entry will be offered to the next athlete in line. If not, the participant must find someone to take their place. Please note that a refund will only be given once a substitution is found and they have paid for their entry. Under no circumstances may someone take part under another athlete’s name. Please be aware that failure to appear at an event for which you are registered means that your entry fee will neither be refunded nor transferred to the following year’s event.


In any ultra-marathon training programme, the final six weeks are the most important. So, if you’ve got some solid base work behind you, here’s how to make the most of it in preparation for the Mont-Aux-Sources 50km Challenge.

Before embarking on preparation for this ultra-mountain challenge, there are two very important things you should do:

  • Commit yourself to discipline. Have the determination to be consistent in your training and try to stick to the programme as closely as possible, unless you have to miss a session because you are ill.
  • If you have not already done so, buy yourself a quality pair of trail running shoes from a specialist shop.
