Comrades Marathon gold medalist (2014) Prodigal Khumalo and trail running legend Su Don-Wauchope took top honours in the men’s and women’s in the 50km Mont-Aux-Sources trail run event this past weekend. The prestigious run was held on Saturday, September 5 at the Royal Natal National Park, which is part of the Maloti-Drakensberg World Heritage Site.

Winning the men’s event in 05h06mins, Khumalo was thrilled explaining that he had suffered a calf injury half way during the race. “It was absolutely beautiful up in the mountains and the course was technical but I hung in there and am happy with my first Mont-Aux-Sources win,” said Khumalo. Jock Green came in second at 05h12mins and Jevan Malan at 05:16mins.

Don-Wauchope, who won the women’s race in a time of 05h33min, commented “I felt so alive and coming in with my husband made it even more memorable. We are definitely coming back next year.” Don-Wauchope was followed by Ann Ashworth in 05h41min and Helen Squirrell-Armstrong came third in a time of 05h53.

Over 350 passionate trail runners gathered at the Drakensburg highlands to explore the rugged terrain in aid of the Bearded Vulture. The Bearded Vulture once roamed freely from the Cape of Good Hope now it is thought that the only population left in the Southern Hemisphere resides in our isolated and majestic Maloti-Drakensberg highlands, with less than 100 pairs remaining in South Africa.

The Old Mutual Wild Series team welcomed the legendary mountaineer, adventurer and inspirational Sibusiso Vilane as their ambassador and ‘More Than Yourself’ fundraiser. Vilane passionately shared why he joined in this adventure, “I am an adventurer and a conservationist by choice! It gives me a profound satisfaction when I use my adventures and natural physical abilities to help organisations like Wildlands that run conservation projects that are close to my heart. I have been linking most of my climbing, running and polar travels to a number of charitable fundraising campaigns and this is why I have decided to join the ‘More Than Yourself’ campaign for the Old Mutual Wild Series events.”

Hugh Hacking, Head of Corporate Consultants, Old Mutual commented, “The reason why Old Mutual supports the Wild Series is that we believe that for a business to be successful, we have to operate within communities and the environment to make sure that we give back as a way of investing in the sustainable development of the Old Mutual brand and to show our commitment to responsible business. The ‘More Than Yourself’ platform allows participants to fundraise to further cement that commitment.”

Kevin McCann, Deputy Director of Conservation SPACE with Wildlands commented, “With the massive pressure on species such as the Bearded Vulture in the Maloti Drakensberg mountains, events such as the Mont-Aux-Sources trail run not only allows individuals to contribute through their participation, but also get exposed to the real issues facing these species. The ‘More Than Yourself’ fundraising campaign helps passionate individuals make a valuable contribution towards the much needed funding to help conserve them for future generations.”

Event coordinator Andrew Booth said: “It is important to acknowledge that this truly unique event would not have been possible without the support of all our sponsors. A huge thank you must go to Old Mutual, Sunday Tribune, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, ABI, Radox, Orion Mont-Aux Sources Hotel and Jonssons.”
