Trail Run

Mountain-biking is only allowed on the route and in the direction shown by route markers, unless the organisers announce changes. The route, especially the remote portion, will be marked with plastic barrier tape attached to fencing droppers at intervals.

Please note that the start has been moved to Hillside which is approximately 30km from the finish of the Challenge at Giant’s Castle Picnic Area.

Riders will start from the Stables at Hillside and continue out of Hillside along the gravel road to the Emanjokweni Village where the route makes a right turn (marshaled) taking riders up the hill on the 4×4 track to the boundary of the Giant’s Castle Game Reserve. The route then climbs out onto the Ntondolo Flats following a single track to Check Point 1, which is at the base of the Ntondolo Ridge. The climb up the Ntondolo Ridge is a compulsory portage of approximately 600m.

Cyclists then follow the marked single track cross-country to the Njesuthi 4×4 track and Check Point 2. Cyclists continue along the Njesuthi track passing through Check Point 3 at Cloudland Col and then drop back down to the Bushman’s River crossing at the Witteberg Entrance Gate (Check Point 4), at which point a right turn is made to take riders back up the tar road to the finish at the Giant’s Castle Picnic Area.

Standard mountain-biking danger signs will be used to warn of dangerous points along the main downhill section of the route from Check Point 3.

There are 4 check points along the route in total. Each checkpoint is manned by medical assistants and a coordinator. All participants are checked through these check points, which are in radio contact with the Start and Finish Area Manager.
